DESCRIPTION:
This very popular and now hard-to-find cloth bound volume about the infamous American boxer Jack Dempsey, aka 'Kid Blackie' and 'The Manassa Mauler' was of both Irish and Native American ancestry (Cherokee.) There wasn't a fighter alive at the early part of the 20th century who was more famous and even slightly overshadowed the once Heavyweight Champion of the World, Jack Dempsey. He went on to star in Vaudeville and then later in Hollywood. Literally everyone alive it seemed, wanted to get a picture taken with him. He was an American cultural icon with nearly no parallel in the 1920's. This original orange cloth volume by Nat Fleischer, 1929, has embossed black ink typography and graphic iconography of Dempsey on the front board cover, showing the prize fighter in his favorite boxing pose. The cover's orange color is only slightly diminished along the edges of the spine, which remain intact and unbroken. All the interior pages are present and intact. The book is clean, with no interior tears, loss, foxing, tanning or stains. The book has two hand-written inscriptions. Published in 1929 by 'The Ring Athletic Library, Book 5' with many photographs and illustrations, written by the venerable and well-known, celebrated boxing writer Nat Fleischer. Absolutely terrific and a wonderful addition for any sporting library of consequence.
