DESCRIPTION:
Offered is this intact and remarkable leather bound literary volume, 'Memoir of Col. Ethan Allen,' by Hugh Moore, 1834, 1st edition, published by O. R. Cook, Plattsburg, New York, on not only the important personage of the famous Vermonter, Revolutionary War General and American Founding Father Colonel Ethan Allen, but it's a biography told of his early beginnings in Connecticut, his purchase of land later in New Hampshire and of his putting down solid, lasting roots in Vermont and his personal involvement in the politics and military intrigue of the newly formed State of Vermont, its dispute with New York State and of the once considered secession of Vermont from the newly formed, independent Union and rejoining the United Kingdom as a British territory. The political intrigue and specifics of the time, defy the imagination and are more than just a 'good read' but illuminate upon and correct some of the political mythologies we still harbor today, about these idolized personages, the American Founding Fathers and their often personal and financial motives. A few scuffs and scratches on the front and back leather boards (mostly found on the outer margins) mar the otherwise intact leather cover and spine. The gold gilt decorated spine is intact. Contained within are stories of the Green Mountain Boys, the pivotal Surrender of Fort Ticonderoga by the British Colonial army, the ill-fated American revolutionary assault on the British in Montreal, Canada, Ethan Allen's subsequent imprisonment by the British, until he was ultimately released in a post-war prisoner swap between the British and Americans and a host of other intriguing and important historical and military subplots from the important and transformative third quarter of the 18th century. A great addition to any American antiquarian library. Not all of us have a furniture company named in our honor. He was a towering American personality, not only in physical stature, measuring six feet, six inches tall, but also in political and historical stature as well. Ethan Allen is and will always be an important, essential name associated with the great rebellion against British Colonial rule in the Americas and the formation of the American Republic, created with great material loss and selfless sacrifice. A truly wonderful antique volume. Splendid.
