RARE EARLY 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN VINTAGE PANORAMIC SEPIA TONED LONG PHOTOGRAPH OF CAMP DEVENS (FORT DEVENS) AYER/SHIRLEY, MASSACHUSETTS (1924) NATIONAL GUARD & GUESTS (UNFRAMED)
Dated 1924
Early 20th century American vintage panoramic photographs of US military camps & enlisted men
DIMENSIONS:
37" Long x 8" Height
DESCRIPTION:
Estate fresh and discovered in a home along the Massachusetts-New Hampshire state border and not far from the scene of the photograph and what was once known as Camp Devens or Fort Devens, located in the towns of Ayer and Shirley, Massachusetts. This original, authentic long photographic print dated 1924, with white cursive ink found on the lower center and lower right margin, features US enlisted men from 'Battery H' of the 102nd. Pictured with the WWI era 'doughboys' in their period wool khaki military uniforms are members of their extended families, with grandfathers, grandmothers, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and young children, as well as newborn babies. In the back can be seen several wooden clapboard barracks where the men would congregate for meals in the mess halls and where the men would bunk down at night and sleep. This sepia toned long photo shows the interaction between military and civilian life and the importance enlisted men held for a nation weary of war after WWI. A great cultural artifact that captures a still oddly naive and innocent country, which still held out the promise of American exceptionalism and the long held belief, that the United States of America was indeed special and still a beckon for the underprivileged and poor of the entire world. Here, sacrifice and valor is on full display, some 96 years ago. Amazing.
CONDITION:
Good to Very Good overall vintage condition.
