(Circa 1865-1880)
19th century photography of Native Americans
DIMENSIONS:
Diminutive, measuring 1" in Height x 3/4" in Width
DESCRIPTION:
Offered for your review and careful consideration is this amazing, exceptionally rare and recently discovered tintype photographic image of a Native American man in full period tribal costume, with metal bicep bands, a beaded, wide choker necklace, a loose-fitted cotton collar-less period shirt, with one arm holding what appears to be a thin wool jacket and wearing an assortment of hand crafted, reflective metal tribal necklaces, long dark hair in pony tails and with the other arm bent, with a hand resting on a Victorian walnut round pedestal, featuring European Victorian marble or metal statuary. It's diminutive at 1" x 3/4" but packs a real punch. An exceedingly rare and very important and extraordinary American historical artifact, chronicling the history and long journey of Native Americans in the United States of America. In simply exceptional condition, scarce and nearly priceless. Offered without a frame. It's practically unscathed and remains untouched. There appears to be but a few scuffs and very minor surface abrasions to the tintype photograph but which don't obscure the overall viewing of the subject. About as rare an item as any American historian, antiquarian or museum director could possibly hope for. Incredible. Museum-quality. Rarer than rare. Extraordinary.
CONDITION:
Very Good to Excellent overall antique condition. There are a few minor scuffs and some very small abrasions to the surface of the tintype photograph which do not obscure the viewing of the subject. The tintype was found out-of-frame and lodged unseen and unknown in the biding, near the interior spine of a 19th century book. This is an important and fortuitous historic discovery of national importance and one which will hopefully be entered into the national historic record of the Native American indigenous people who once inhabited the vast continent of North America, long before Europeans came to its shores. A veritable lightening strike on the head of a pin. Breathtaking and almost unbelievable.
