DESCRIPTION:
Offered for your careful review and consideration is this very rare, circa 1976 collection of seven (7) separate illustrated comic strips by (7) different artists, as a collective rebuttal and critical artistic response to the previous bonafide villain of the comic book industry and who's messianic quest for federal regulation and content management of the American comic book publishing industry, made him 'Enemy #1' among comic book artists, underground illustrators and practitioners of counter-cultural iconography and content and who almost single-handedly, crippled and nearly ruined the nascent American comic book industry. The bound black and white volume actually has nothing to do with Dr. Frederic Wertham (his surname purposefully spelled incorrectly on the front cover but correctly on the inset page) but invokes his hated name among comic artists, in order to set the tone of what critically the collection of illustrated narratives was setting out to accomplish. The drawings, often overtly erotic and adult-themed are in your face and unrepentant. Some of the drawings are very accomplished figurative works, however they are as often explicit in their depictions of sexuality and stay focused and true to staying the course of publishing adult-themed, illustrated comic material for of-age, discerning adults, who simply choose to expose themselves legally and lawfully to it and to consume the material offered. Dr. Frederic Wertham is seen by the comic book industry and its legions of comic artists, writers and illustrators as a kind of black-capped, messianic, right-wing, conservative, puritanical champion of artistic censorship and of increased federal content management and regulation of publishing and of art. Wertham was the 'censorship cop' and the second coming of Senator Joe McCarthy, as far as the American comic industry was concerned. This volume of seven illustrated comic works by seven individual artists and published in 1976 by Clifford Neal, is about as clear and obvious a response to his failed efforts to stifle and silence their artistic voices, as you could possibly get. Incendiary. Unrepentant and very, very rare. This is a part of our collective American culture and is testament to the ill-fated attempts by some, to regulate thought and to actually seek to criminalize artistic expression and art. A simply magnificent cultural artifact. Own a piece of American comic history. You won't find another anytime, anywhere soon. Terrific.
