(Dated 1802)
Early published works by the United States' Founding Fathers & Thomas Jefferson's only book-length volume
DIMENSIONS:
6" Height x 4" Width x 1 ¼" Depth
Weight: 8 oz.
DESCRIPTION:
Featuring 368 complete, intact pages, with various lined charts, diagrams and a folding, pull out, early woodblock print of the State of Virginia. Both the front and back of the original leather cover show evidence of previous wear and some superficial scuffing. The leather is free of unsightly stains and deep abrasions. Nothing has been done to the leather cover to visually enhance it. The volume remains as it was found in the southern New Hampshire estate where it was taken from. The leather spine however, with gold gilt embossed sepia brown spine band, is unbroken and opens and closes freely. Only the early State of Virginia folding, pull-out map has missing, weakened and subsequently torn away paper on the left margin of the map, amounting to about 20% of the entire map. The various diagrams and charts listing the different Native American tribes once found in Virginia, as well as documentation of Virginia fauna and various species of birds and animals found in Virginia, are all present and intact. Aside from the unfortunate loss to the fold-out map of the State of Virginia, this 9th American edition by Thomas Jefferson, 'Notes on the State of Virginia,' 1802, published by H. Sprague of Boston, Massachusetts, demonstrates the popularity and demand for this only full length volume by one of the United States' most revered and important Founding Fathers, with this Boston, Massachusetts' publication of the original 1787 London 1st edition publication of the same text. With only a few minor page corner folds and some minor to moderate tanning and foxing, largely occurring toward the front of the volume, this 1802 H. Sprague, Boston, MA, 9th American edition is in what would be considered, to still be in generally fair to good overall antique condition, with the left margin loss of the pull-out Virginia map and some minor tanning and foxing, preventing me from justifying a good to very good condition rating. It's honest and an unaltered, unbastardized American edition. A wonderful addition for most antiquarian libraries, especially specializing in the writings and published texts of America's Founding Fathers. Very handsome.
CONDITION:
Fair to Good overall antique condition.
