JOHN PAUL WALKER (AMERICAN, 20TH CENTURY) SIGNED 1957 MODERNIST ABSTRACT FIGURATIVE OIL ON CANVAS, SLAT FRAME
(Dated 1957)
American mid-20th c Modernist painting
DIMENSIONS:
30 ½" Height x 24 ½" Width x ¼" Depth
DESCRIPTION:
In very well-preserved overall shape. This wonderful abstract figurative work by the American Modernist painter John Paul Walker is now 62 years old and since it has no tears, water damage, scuffs, noticeable abrasions or significant paint loss, this period vintage mid-20th century Modernist abstract/figurative oil on canvas, would have to be considered to be in very well-preserved overall vintage condition. The painting is still on its original wooden stretcher and is framed in an original, period, gray painted wooden slat frame. It's signed and dated by the artist on the back of the canvas in heavy black paint. A truly remarkable fusion of abstracted figuration, containing referential imagery and non-referential imagery at the same time, with abstract, gestural applications of color, evoking emotional or psychological internal states. With heavy impasto and viscous paint. The figuration is startling, fresh and quite surprising. The kinetic drawing with paint is spontaneous, imbued with movement and leaves the energy and life force of the artist right on the surface. Signed John Paul Walker on the verso in black paint and dated 1957, this and another painting by the same American artist were found together in the same Boston, Massachusetts estate. Gorgeous.
CONDITION:
Very Good to Excellent overall vintage condition.
