LATE 19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE GERMAN 'MINERVA' FEMALE DOLL,
With PAINTED BRASS HEAD &
ORIGINAL HANDMADE STUFFED LINEN BODY
(GLASS EYES INSIDE HEAD)
Circa 1875-1895
German 19th century Victorian dolls

DESCRIPTION:
Offered for your review and consideration is this absolutely untouched, 'as-is,' 'as-found,' antiqueGerman 'Minerva' Victorian full-figure doll, with hand-painted brass head and home-made stitched & stuffed linen body, with torso, arms and legs. The doll's head once featured inserted glass eyes, which are still presumably inside of the hollow head, since something (one or two objects) can be heard rolling around inside. No attempt has been made to redress or 'in-paint' the paint loss on the face. This is an imported German doll nearly 120-140 years old and was clearly used and used often by its young American female owners. The pink, ocher and sepia colored linen of the stuffed body is soiled in places. The doll hasn't been touched and wasn't cleaned or even dusted. It's estate fresh and was found here in southern New Hampshire. The stuffed body is by and large intact and doesn't suffer from any loss of limbs or material. There are a few small holes, tears and old repairs to the stuffed linen body and what appear to be sewn repairs to the doll's knees. A great antique doll with a slightly unnerving, spooky, steampunk, eerie presence. If you're not afraid of antique clowns or old dolls then this German Minerva 19th century antique brass headed doll might look awfully good placed next to your collection of early and primitive antiques. Authentic and 100% original. Terrific.

DIMENSIONS:
21" Height x 6" Width x 3 ½" Depth

CONDITION:

PITSEOLAK ASHOONA COLOR WOODBLOCK OF MUSK OX

PITSEOLAK ASHOONA (CAPE DORSET/CANADIAN INUK, 1907-1983) MID-20TH CENTURY SIGNED VINTAGE COLOR WOODBLOCK OF MUSK OX
IN ORIGINAL STAINED HARDWOOD FRAME, STAMPED WITH STACKED HIEROGLYPHIC CHARACTERS BY THE ARTIST ON LOWER LEFT
Vintage 20th c Inuit indigenous fine art
    (Circa 1956-1966)

    DIMENSIONS:
    Frame: 11 ¾" Width x 10" Height
    Image: 5 ½" Width x 4" Height

    DESCRIPTION
This is an authentic, signed/stamped Pitseolak Ashoona (Canadian Inuk, 1907-1983) vintage, framed color woodblock print of a musk ox. There are some slight abrasions on the paper's surface, resembling scuffs, which are slight imperfections in the paper. These incidences most likely occurred when the woodblock print was out-of-frame and vulnerable to scuffing while in an artist's portfolio or exposed and vulnerable while in print drawers. They are barely noticeable but since they exist, they needed to be mentioned. The color woodblock print doesn't suffer any more damage, be it water stains, creases, folds, permutations, smudges, soiling, foxing, tanning or any other condition issues. Pitseolak Ashoona is a Canadian national treasure and one of the most celebrated of all indigenous Canadian Inuit artists, active in the 20th century. She was a member of the Canadian Royal Academy of the Arts. She was awarded the most prestigious Order of Canada in 1977. Her prolific body of work is held in many public and private collections. Absolutely gorgeous and absolutely, resolutely original and authentic. Outstanding.

    CONDITION:
Very Good to Excellent overall vintage condition.

       R. E. OBERLIN (AMERICAN, 19TH-20TH CENTURY)
ANTIQUE PASTEL PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG DEBYTANTE IN WHITE SUMMER BEACH DRESS ON VELLUM BOARD (UNFRAMED) SIGNED IN GRAPHITE ON VERSO

      (1885-1915)
      'Boston School' turn-of-the-century
       American portrait painting

      DIMENSIONS:
      25" Height x 17" Width

       INSCRIPTION:
Signed twice at the back in graphite that reads
      1.) 'R. E. Oberlin'
      2.) 'R. E. Oberlin $450 3-38 65 1/2 ....'
The vellum artist board is stamped 'New York.'

      DESCRIPTION:
This wonderful late 19th to early 20th century period pastel portrait drawing on vellum board by R. E. Oberlin(American) was found in an estate out-of-frame and it is fortunate it has survived in the kind of well preserved overall antique condition that it has. It's a simply marvelous Boston School, turn-of-the century pastel portrait of a young patrician debutante, standing in repose for the artist, wearing a lacy white summer evening dress or beach dress, bearing her snow white arms, shoulders and neck, giving the portrait a noticeable erotic charge. This was clearly a young, available society girl and a young woman from means. To have your portrait painted, even in pastel chalks, such as this one, meant that you were from a family of clear financial resources. You were most probably not from the 'other side of the tracks.' The pastel portrait drawing suffers no other abrasions, tears, deformities, warping, punctures or permutations of the vellum pastel paper or unsightly water stains. The variety of yellows constitute a symphony of gold, populated by discretionary use of burnt sienna, sepia brown, canary yellow, yellow ocher, cream and chalk white. This pastel portrait drawing was done with visible and real care, tremendous tenderness and clearly wasn't the work of merely a 'Sunday painter.' Outstanding and a veritable peek into the Victorian parlor of late 19th to early 20th century America. Most likely from a practitioner of the famous Boston School of portrait and landscape painting. Outstanding.

      CONDITION:
Very Good to Excellent overall antique condition.

There's a small chip in the paper on the upper left side of the vellum artist's board (mill board) and a very slight, narrow smudge, which is minor and not depreciating or fatal, that travels at an angle across the young woman's face. This is barely noticeable and unfortunately is one of the small casualties of the pastel drawing being stored out of frame and in a portfolio. The portfolio otherwise protected the piece for over nearly if not, 100 years or more. No attempt has been made to 'in-paint,' rectify or otherwise conceal this very slight damage to the surface of the pastel. It remains 100% untouched and in 'as-found' original antique condition. A glorious period pastel portrait.
