PHILADELPHIA, PA, NOV. 5, 1795
DESCRIPTION:
The leather spines on both volumes are intact and the leather bound books are complete, less some leather that's separated and is now missing on the cordovan and gold gilt stamped title band of volume 4. The leather exteriors show evidence of prior use and have some minor abrasions and scuffs over the entirety of their exterior surfaces. The books are inscribed in black ink with the name of their possibly initial owner David A. Ogden. This pair (volume's 3 and 4) of the four volume series 'A History of the Earth and Animated Nature,' by Oliver Goldsmith was published in November 5, 1795 at 118 Market Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was printed by Mat(t)hew Carey. It's profusely illustrated with various full page woodblock illustrations of various fauna occurring in the natural world. The illustrations show congregated species occupying the same page and are simply splendidly realized. The interior pages are complete and largely free of tears, multiple corner folds, significant paper loss & other depreciating damage. These late 18th century volumes of natural history are really as much about the unassailable detailed woodblock illustrations, as they are about the informative, researched and scholarly scientific text that accompanies them. Simply remarkable, early American volumes. 18th century American books are rare but having two of the four volumes of this splendid antique leather bound late 18th century natural history set is superlative. Magnificent.DIMENSIONS:Each volume: 8 ½" Height x 5 ¼" Width x 1 ½" ThickCONDITION:Good to Very Good overall antique condition.(*Please scroll down the page to view enlarged photos below. Thank you.)
