 DESCRIPTION:
Offered for your review and consideration is this recently discovered pair of late 18th to early 19th century Chinese antique China Trade cast bronze figures mounted on brass moulded cornice bases of two mirrored Chinese warriors in period costume on horseback, wearing mail body armor and with their hair pulled up and tufted into ponytails. The pair of bronze figures are on their original brass bases and while the backs of both the bronze and brass show incredible darkening and naturally aged patina with episodes of verdigris oxidation, the fronts of the bronze and brass were at some previous point in time chemically cleaned to remove what was most likely considered to be 'blackened' bronze surfaces, which they no doubt believe interfered with viewing the figures. The figures appear to have been sealed with a clear lacquer or material to arrest subsequent oxidation and darkening. These were produced for the China Trade in the late 18th-early 19th century. Very fine and absolutely wonderful decorative objects from the famous China Trade and the export of decorative Chinese objects to North America, Europe and the world over. These are large, imposing sculptures that would have been intended for formal display on a sideboard, fireplace mantle, library bookcase or perhaps even used as a fireplace fence. Regardless of where they may have been displayed, their shallow, detailed, incised mark-making on their bas-relief surfaces, point to these as being accomplished Chinese sculptural works that reflected the fashion and decorative sensibility of the European, as well as the nascent American export market. Evidence of this is found in the Baroque treatment given to the bottom of the cast bronze forms, where we see highly ornate, decorative, mirrored swag, floral/paisley design. We've elected not to remove the clear lacquer from the fronts of the forms, on either the brass bases or the bronze forms. We have decided to leave them in the state that they're presently in and leave the decision whether to remove the clear lacquer sealant or to keep it up to their new owner. Regardless of the fact that someone previously performed this supposed 'improvement' of the pair of Chinese bronze figures, still doesn't significantly diminish their rarity or importance as a wonderful coupling of late 18th to early 19th century China Trade antique decorative objects. Very fine and extraordinarily beautiful, formal pieces. Superlative. Top shelf.

CONDITION:
Good to Very Good overall antique condition.

DESCRIPTION:
This well-known piece of US Civil War literature is a true original, authentic 1st edition hardcover, gold gilt embossed, cloth volume titled 'Life and Death In Rebel Prisons,' by Robert H. Kellogg and published in 1865, by L. Stebbins in Hartford, Connecticut after the conclusion of the US Civil War and the North's victory over the southern, pro-slavery Confederacy. The volume is really much closer to excellent overall antique condition than just very good condition. Only the top of the cloth spine is slightly faded and has some minor gold gilt loss and is somewhat weakened along the top margin. The spine is however unbroken and opens and closes easily. There's some slight scuffing on the front cover, some minor spotting and tanning on the interior pages, preventing us from classifying the volume as being in excellent or fine overall antique condition. Very Good would be an honest appraisal of its overall antique condition. Also of note, would be the cursive pencil writing and profuse annotations and personal references found on the affixed inside cover paper surfaces and inset pages, made by a previous owner of the volume, referencing family members who served in the conflagration and who were affected by the events of the war, which rocked the nation in the mid-19th century and affected many families throughout both the North and the South. With profuse full page illustrations, maps and diagrams of forts, Confederate prisons and fortified stockades, the sheer, terrifying level of brutality and inhumanity suffered by captured Union troops at the hands of the Confederacy, while they were interned in their southern prisons, is on full display and told in great, horrific, painstaking detail through images and text. The profuse, nearly full page illustrations are many and wonderful, with only some minor episodes of foxing and tanning on its interior paper pages. A wonderful antique US Civil War volume. Terrific.
CONDITION:
Very Good to Excellent overall antique condition.

 DESCRIPTION:
For sale is this recently discovered and in very well-preserved overall antique condition, early 20th century American antique panoramic sepia-toned, black and white long photo in its original thin-profile oak wooden frame of Company 'B,' 101 U.S. Engineers stationed at Camp Devens in 1917, during the 3rd year of the world military conflagration also known as World War I, ravaging and laying waste to large swaths of continental Europe at that time. This was a formal, organized and posed photograph of the entire US military company in their uniforms with rifles and familiar WWI doughboy hats. Four ranking officers can be seen sitting on folding stools in the front. A cook and several women, possibly wives of the enlisted soldiers, can be seen standing behind the assembled troops. Canvas tents and tree lined hills can be seen in the background. White ink identifies the US (Army) Engineer company as well as the photographer, 'Cirkut Photo Co., 11 Whitman St., Leominster, MA.' There's no noticeable, visible damage to the surface of the photo or to the frame. A great early 20th century American military artifact in wonderful, very well-preserved overall antique condition. Terrific.
